Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Point May - Northwest Pond ATV Trail
Proponent: Greater Lamaline Area Multi-Purpose Trail Association            (Reg. 1743)

The Greater Lamaline Area Multi-Purpose Trail Association is proposing to construct a 14.2 kilometre ATV trail from Point May to Northwest Pond on the Burin Peninsula. The trail will be three metres in width. A bridge is proposed to be constructed over Tom Fisher Pond Brook. Trail construction is anticipated to take approximately five months and will commence upon approval.

The undertaking was registered on February 13, 2014; the deadline for public comments is March 21, 2014; and the minister’s decision is due March 27, 2014.

Mount Pearl Biomedical Waste Transfer Facility
Proponent: Stericycle, ULC                                               (Reg. 1742)

The proponent proposes to establish a biomedical waste transfer facility using an existing building at 27 Clyde Avenue, Donovan’s Industrial Park, Mount Pearl. The proponent currently collects and transports biomedical waste generated by the hospitals directly to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia for disposal. The transfer facility would collect, receive and consolidate the waste before shipping outside the Province. Upon receipt at the facility, the biomedical waste will be off-loaded inside the building where it will be inspected/weighed and transferred into containers more suitable for marine transportation. The containers will be sealed and then put into temporary refrigerated storage. The facility will receive approximately 2,000 kilograms of biomedical waste per day (or 60,000 kilograms per month) and will keep in storage for one week. The existing building/warehouse will require only minor modifications such as the addition of two loading dock doors.

The undertaking was registered on February 13, 2014; the deadline for public comments is March 21, 2014; and the minister’s decision is due March 30, 2014.
