Developing a Positive Learning Environment

Initiatives Progress Under Learning for a Lifetime Plan

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, today gave an update on the implementation of the Provincial Governments six-year plan to provide students with strong foundations for language and reading skills. As part of Learning for a Lifetime A Literacy Plan for Kindergarten to Secondary, this year the annual renewal of provincial curriculum included a focus on English Language Arts and Art, with plans for further updates in September 2015.

The world today is changing faster than ever. Our students require the latest knowledge and skills. That is why the curriculum offered from K-12 in Newfoundland and Labrador is continually being updated. We routinely review and evaluate course content, learning strategies, and teaching tools to ensure that our students are provided the best opportunities to meet and exceed their goals.
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development

The renewal of the English language arts curriculum is part of Learning for a Lifetime, which supports continued collaboration and professional learning for teachers, the development of reading and writing strategies and the development of new initiatives for those with demonstrated achievement gaps.

In 2014, new curriculum has been implemented for Grade 11 English; Grade 11 Writing; Grade 8 and Grade 9 Art; and Grade 6 and Grade 2 English Language Arts. In September 2015, new curriculum is planned for Grade 12 English courses, Grade 3 English Language Arts and Grade 1 Science. As of September 2015, every English Language Arts course from Kindergarten to Grade 12 will have been renewed, with the renewals having starting in 2010.
