Supporting Fair and Peaceful Communities
Canadian Red Cross Recognizes Work of Provincial Government
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has received the Canadian Red Cross Partners in Humanity Citation for its involvement in the EDGE 2013 Conference. At a ceremony held today at Memorial University, the department joined the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association and Memorial University's Faculty of Education as all three groups received the award in recognition of their commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable people within their community by assisting the Red Cross to effectively mobilize the power of humanity.
"This
recognition by the Canadian Red Cross affirms the intent of the EDGE Conference
and demonstrates the inherent value in addressing social injustices as we
progress toward a fairer and safer society for future generations. The
Provincial Government was proud to provide support of $30,000 to facilitate the
conference and to sponsor the attendance of several principals and teachers. I
extend my gratitude to the Canadian Red Cross for showing this appreciation for
the hard work of all those involved in planning the conference."
- The
Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood
Development
The EDGE 2013 Conference, At the Edge - Creating Direction for Peace and Justice, took place at Memorial University August 21-23, 2013. The conference brought together individuals and organizations that are involved in educating and working with young people, such as parents, youth, educators, school administrators, researchers, school district and education professionals, as well as community stakeholders such as the Canadian Red Cross, police services, community youth centres, and university and college faculty and deans. Attendees listened, learned and reflected on the concept that in every act of injustice, there is a message that must be understood and can be used to effect personal and organizational change.
"We are
very proud to receive this award and will continue to collaborate with
individuals and organizations to create a fair and just society for all. The
Provincial Government's Safe and Caring Schools initiative supplements the
messages of the EDGE 2013 Conference. By engaging in discourse with youth and
children, we are working to address bullying, social injustice and attitudes and
actions that impact others negatively."

Minister Sullivan
