Recognizing Those Dedicated to the School Community

School Councils Day Focuses on Student Success

The Provincial Government is recognizing Thursday, October 9, as the second annual School Councils Day to formally acknowledge the contributions of school councils towards the enhancement of school programs and overall student achievement. School Councils Day is part of Education Week, which is being celebrated in Newfoundland and Labrador October 5-11.

“As we celebrate the second annual School Councils Day, I would like to thank all parents, community volunteers, school staff members and those who dedicate their time to making school councils a success. Today is a day to recognize the vision and dedication of school councils. Today we also take the opportunity to encourage community partners and parents to get involved and learn what their school councils do to contribute to a better learning environment for our children. Fostering an inclusive learning environment from infancy to high school is the focus of the new Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development

School councils develop, encourage and promote policies, practices and activities to enhance the quality of school programs and the level of student achievement in the school. The school council also approves the school development plan and supports and promotes that plan to the wider school community.

"We are pleased to acknowledge the contributions and importance of school councils during the second annual School Councils Day. School councils are one of the most valuable institutions that allow students, teachers, and parents to provide democratic and educational leadership within the school. They are critical in giving the school community a voice in shaping their school environment.”
- Jim Dinn, President, Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA)

The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of School Councils (NLFSC) strives for excellence in education for all children in Newfoundland and Labrador and provides leadership, representation and services to school council volunteers and parent organizations.

"Effective school council structures, which involve the whole school, can offer huge benefits to both the community and the individual. Research has shown that the involvement of parents, guardians and community representatives in education has a positive impact on improved student learning and helps to create a sense of community at the school. By working together as partners, we can encourage greater academic success and all-round growth for our students and develop caring and contributing citizens."
- Peter Whittle, President, Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of School Councils
