Upgrading Schools to Serve Students and Communities

Infrastructure Upgrades Continue with Improvements to McKay’s School

A tender valued at close to $440,000 has been awarded to BDW Roofing Inc. of Stephenville to undertake a partial roof and window replacement at E.A. Butler All Grade in McKay’s.

Butler All Grade in recent years, including the construction of an extension and other interior and exterior renovations. This is the latest in a series of systematic upgrades to existing school infrastructure throughout the province designed to ensure they remain safe and comfortable environments for students and staff.”

E. A Butler All Grade serves a K-12 student population of close to 140.

This is one of several projects totalling close to $6.2 million approved for schools in the St. George’s - Stephenville East area in recent years, including:

  • Close to $4.1 million in roofing, exterior upgrades and fireproofing upgrades at St. Michael’s Elementary;
  • Over $300,000 for roofing and other upgrades at Appalachia High School;
  • Over $236,000 for general upgrades to Stephenville Middle School; and
  • Over $236,000 for roofing and other upgrades to Our Lady of Mercy Elementary.

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook provides over $128 million for educational infrastructure, continuing an historically unprecedented investment in new schools, extensions, redevelopments, renovations and repairs and maintenance.

More than $681 million has been allocated for K-12 infrastructure since 2004. Fourteen new schools have been constructed, eight more are in various stages of planning or construction, 27 major extensions and renovation projects have been completed, and 10 more are underway.
