Supporting Learning Opportunities for Educators

Play-Based Learning to be Highlighted at Workshop

Primary teachers, early childhood educators and other early learning partners will attend a two-day information workshop, Summer Institute 2014 – Play the Kindergarten Way, focusing on early literacy development and play-based learning, on August 27-28 at the District School on Strawberry Marsh Road in St. John’s.

“Success in learning starts in infancy. Research shows that engaging children at a young age enhances early literacy development and significantly impacts children’s well-being and later success in school, work and the community. That is why we are pleased to provide $30,000 for Summer Institute 2014 – Play the Kindergarten Way, which provides a forum for education professionals to discuss early literacy development and play-based learning, and to learn how these activities can stimulate language development in young children.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education

Play the Kindergarten Way focuses specifically on meeting Kindergarten curriculum outcomes through play-based learning in the classroom. The keynote speaker, Joanne Sleighton, is an international award-winning Kindergarten consultant and professional speaker.

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook allocates $35.4 million over three years to implement a universal, full-day Kindergarten program, beginning in September 2016, and to further enhance early learning opportunities. The funding represents the beginning of Phase II of the province’s early learning strategy, Learning From the Start.
