Investing in Upgrades to Community Schools

$524,000 Tender Awarded for Windows at C.B.S. School

Queen Elizabeth Regional High School in Conception Bay South will soon have new windows, following the recent award of a tender, valued at close to $524,000, to Eastern Contracting Ltd. of Mount Pearl.

With this latest award, more than $1.7 million has been invested in repairs and maintenance projects at Queen Elizabeth Regional High in recent years, including funding for roofing and several interior and exterior upgrades. Meanwhile, within that same timeframe, a total of about $25 million has been designated for schools within the District of Conception Bay South. Additional investments include:

  • $11.4 million (to date) to plan, design and begin construction of a new K-7 school in Conception Bay South;
  • $3.2 million for an extension and additional upgrades at Holy Spirit High;
  • $2.3 million for an extension and interior upgrades at St. Edward’s Elementary;
  • $2.2 million for roofing, windows and interior and exterior upgrades at Frank Roberts Junior High;
  • $2 million for exterior work at St. George’s Elementary;
  • $1.6 million for an extension and exterior upgrades at Upper Gullies Elementary; and
  • Almost $400,000 for renovations at Villanova Junior High.

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook provides over $128 million for educational infrastructure, continuing a historically unprecedented investment in new schools, extensions, redevelopments, renovations and repairs and maintenance.

More than $681 million has been allocated for K-12 infrastructure since 2004. Thirteen new schools have opened, nine more are in various stages of planning or construction, 27 major extensions and renovation projects have been completed, and 10 more are underway.
