Recognizing Those Dedicated to Student Success

Minister Highlights School Year Accomplishments

As the 2013-14 school year comes to an end, the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education, took the opportunity today to congratulate students and teachers on their successes and to wish them a safe and enjoyable summer.

“This has been another great school year for students in our province as they continue to excel in a variety of pursuits. It has also been a productive year for the Department of Education, with the introduction of a new Safe and Caring Schools Policy and corresponding legislation; the opening of new schools in St. Anthony and Carbonear; ongoing construction of several new schools and extensions; the announcement that full-day Kindergarten will be implemented province-wide in September 2016; and a host of other new and ongoing initiatives designed to improve the education experience for students throughout the province.”

Minister King also thanked volunteer school board trustees and district staff at both the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District and the Conseil scolaire francophone provincial, as well as school council members throughout the province, for their efforts in enhancing learning opportunities for students within their respective regions.

“The end of the school year also provides an opportunity to recognize the dedication of administrators, teachers and other education professionals throughout the province. We know there is increased diversity within the classroom today, so the journey to success looks different for each student. Our education professionals are key to providing support to help all students reach their potential and celebrate their successes along the way.”

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook, includes about $872 million for K-12 education in Newfoundland and Labrador, which represents a 48 per cent increase in expenditure since 2003.
