Young Leaders Build Strong Communities

Students Recognized for Promoting Safe and Caring Schools

A total of 14 students from throughout Newfoundland and Labrador have been awarded Safe and Caring Schools Graduating Student Awards, which include a $500 post-secondary tuition voucher for their efforts in promoting safe and caring school environments.

“These awards are designed to highlight the Safe and Caring Schools Initiative and demonstrate how student leaders and school communities can promote and support it. I congratulate schools throughout the province for their efforts to support respectful learning environments and I encourage students, teachers, parents, community leaders and others to reinforce the message of respect for others at home and within our communities.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education

A list of award recipients from across the province can be viewed in the backgrounder below.

The Safe and Caring Schools Graduating Student Awards program was established in 2006 to recognize the leadership of youth in undertaking projects and activities aimed at enhancing the safety and well-being of their school communities – and to help students realize they can make a positive difference in the lives of others.

The program goes hand-in-hand with the Safe and Caring Schools Special Project Awards, which earlier this year saw 39 schools receive $500 each in recognition of their individual efforts to establish safe and caring learning environments. A total of $27,000 is allocated annually for both initiatives.
