Building Modern Learning Communities

Tender Called for New Virginia Park Elementary

A tender has been called to begin the first phase of construction of a new school to replace Virginia Park Elementary.

“This new facility is part of an unprecedented investment in school infrastructure over the past 11 years. It will be constructed adjacent to the existing Virginia Park Elementary and will include 16 classrooms, gymnasium and stage, library resource centre, music room, lunch/multi-purpose room, commercial kitchen and a family resource centre, among other spaces. Planning and site selection for this project has been complicated, so I am pleased to see it moving forward and thank all members of the school community for their patience.”
- Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education

The Virginia Park Elementary tender package includes site preparation and remediation, the establishment of foundations and footings, the assembly of structural steel and the installation of site services such as water and sewer. This is the first of two tenders expected to be issued this year, with the second to include completion of the building. The target opening date is September 2016.

Current construction and service contract tender notices are available on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador website at: www.tw.gov.nl.ca/TenderingandContracts/.

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook provides over $128 million for school infrastructure. Since 2004, more than $681 million has been allocated for K-12 infrastructure. Thirteen new schools have opened; nine more are in various stages of planning or construction; 26 major extension and renovation projects have been completed and 11 more are underway.
