Recognizing Those Dedicated to Student Success
Outstanding Principals Receive Awards at Toronto Gala
Two school principals from this province, Sheldon Barry of Holy Heart High School in St. John’s and Roger Gillingham of Baccalieu Collegiate in Old Perlican, were presented with 2014 Canada’s Most Outstanding Principals awards yesterday (Tuesday, February 25) during a gala event in Toronto. The event is sponsored annually by The Learning Partnership, a national organization dedicated to strong public education systems.
“Principals set the tone for the school, provide direction for staff and
ensure our students receive a quality education. Being named as two of this
country’s outstanding principals is a testament to their leadership and
administrative skills; dedication to school community, and a desire to make
a difference. I congratulate Mr. Barry and Mr. Gillingham for receiving this
honour, and I thank all the principals and teachers in this province for the
great work they do each day.”
- Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education
Principals are nominated for the Most Outstanding Principals awards by their peers, school staff and community members in each province and territory. Nominations are reviewed and final winners selected by a national selection committee composed of education, community and private sector leaders.
“Principals are a driving force in our schools and the work they
undertake with students, parents/guardians and the entire school community
ensures our students become well-educated, socially conscious and engaged
members of society. Principals like Sheldon Barry and Roger Gillingham work
tirelessly towards our goal of student achievement, and help make student
success a target we can reach. I congratulate them both on receiving such
prestigious recognition as two of Canada’s Most Outstanding Principals for
2014.”
- Darrin Pike, CEO/Director of Education, NL English School District
