Students Encouraged to Follow Kaetlyn Osmond at 2014 Sochi Olympics

Students and staff in K-12 schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador will be encouraged to use interactive whiteboards and other advanced technology to watch the performance of Marystown native Kaetlyn Osmond, the national women’s figure skating champion, in the final round of competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, later this month.

Kaetlyn’s free skate program is expected to be broadcast between 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. NST on February 20. The order of skaters will be determined at a later date.

“With more than 4,000 interactive whiteboards placed in K-12 schools in recent years, along with other technological advancements, students today have the opportunity to witness local sports history taking place, anywhere in the world, in real time, right from their classrooms. In winning the national women’s championship, and qualifying for the 2014 Winter Olympics, Kaetlyn has already proven she is a remarkable talent. Now all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, including her friends and family on the Burin Peninsula, will have a chance to cheer her on as she performs for her province, and for her country, in Sochi.”
- Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education

The Provincial Government has also established a webpage, Follow Kaetlyn’s Journey, where all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador will be able to learn more about Kaetlyn’s path to the 2014 Winter Olympics. The webpage can be viewed at: www.ed.gov.nl.ca/edu/sochi2014.html.

“Kaetlyn’s journey is a wonderful example of how dedication, commitment and passion for a sport can help you attain the ultimate in sport achievement, namely the Olympics. Our government is exceptionally proud of Kaetlyn’s outstanding accomplishments, and we wish her the best during her time in Sochi. Undoubtedly, it will be an experience of a lifetime, and we will all be watching her performance. Newfoundland and Labrador will be rooting for this amazing athlete!”
- Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation

For the first time ever, the figure skating team event will make its debut at the Sochi Olympics. Ten qualifying countries will compete across the sport’s four disciplines – men’s, ladies, pairs and ice dancing – for one combined score. The top five teams then qualify to move on to the medal round. Scores will be combined to determine medal winners in the team event. Medals will also be awarded in the individual disciplines.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
