Media Advisory: Minister to Visit Happy Valley-Goose Bay Schools
The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, will attend events, tour facilities and take part in various activities at schools in Happy Valley-Goose Bay tomorrow (Tuesday, January 21). Minister Jackman will be accompanied by Keith Russell, MHA for Lake Melville. The itinerary is as follows:
- 9:45 a.m. – Minister Jackman and MHA Russell will visit Peacock Primary to participate in the official opening of the school’s recently-renovated gymnasium. The $265,000 gymnasium project is the latest in a series of infrastructure improvements at the school – including upgrades to the roof, windows and siding – totalling more than $1.4 million.
- 10:30 a.m. – Minister Jackman and MHA Russell will visit École Boréale, a $2.6 million facility which opened in January 2010. The school serves a K-12 French first-language school population.
- 11:15 a.m. – Minister Jackman and MHA Russell will visit Queen of Peace Middle School where they will interact with students involved in music, art, drama and fitness programming.
- 1:30 p.m. – Minister Jackman and MHA Russell will meet with student leaders at Mealy Mountain Collegiate to discuss a variety of issues, including aspects of the province’s new Safe and Caring Schools Policy. This is a photo opportunity only.
Since 2004, more than $60 million has been approved for school infrastructure in Labrador, including the completion of three new schools – the aforementioned École Boréale in Happy Valley-Goose Bay; Labrador Straits Academy in L’anse au Loup (December 2010); Bayside Academy in Port Hope Simpson (September 2011), as well as the ongoing reconstruction of William Gillett Academy in Charlottetown, scheduled to open in September 2014. The funding also includes the Provincial Government’s contribution of $4 million towards the new Sheshatshiu Innu School (September 2009).
