Securing a Bright Future for Newfoundland and Labrador Families
Provincial Government Supports New Single-Parent Apartment Building in Western Labrador
An additional investment of $280,000 through Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation will help build a 10-unit apartment building for single-parent families in western Labrador. The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister Responsible for Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, made the announcement in Labrador City today on behalf of the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister Responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation.
“The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador recognizes that housing and homelessness are challenging issues in Labrador West. This funding will help the Labrador West Housing and Homelessness Coalition move closer to breaking ground on an apartment building for single-parent families – a needed resource in the region.”

This investment is in addition to $200,000 provided through Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s Provincial Homelessness Fund in 2013-14 and $1.5 million from their Affordable Housing Program in 2011. This brings the total combined funds committed to this project to nearly $2 million.

The Labrador West Housing and Homelessness Coalition plans to build the 10-unit apartment building on Tamarack Drive, on a parcel of land donated by the Labrador City town council. The estimated cost of the project is $2 million. In addition to the apartments, the building will also provide a community space with offices for a housing support worker and other professionals in the fields of nursing, social work and mental health. Construction is anticipated to start this week and be completed by January 2015.

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador – Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and creating healthier communities.
QUICK FACTS:
- An additional $280,000 is being provided towards the construction of a 10-unit apartment building for single-parent families in western Labrador.
- This brings Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s total contribution to the project to approximately $1.98 million. The estimated cost of the project is $2 million.
- In addition to the apartments, the building will also provide a community space with offices for a housing support worker and other professionals in the fields of nursing, social work and mental health.
- Newfoundland and Labrador Housing is the province’s largest landlord, with 5,588 rental units province-wide.
