The Provincial Government continues to deliver on its vessel replacement strategy with today’s announcement of: the award of a $51 million contract to build a new 80-metre vessel for the Fogo Island and Change Islands service; the intention to negotiate a second 80-metre vessel for the Bell Island ferry run, and an additional $10 million investment to upgrade wharf infrastructure on Bell Island and in Portugal Cove to accommodate the new vessel.
“We are very pleased to announce the award of a $51 million contract for
the new 80-metre vessel to serve Fogo Island-Change Islands. It is an
important milestone in our marine transportation strategy and the phased
program of modernization of our provincial fleet. In addition, for our Bell
Island service, I am also announcing our intention to negotiate a second
80-metre vessel and a $10 million investment in wharf infrastructure on Bell
Island and in Portugal Cove to accommodate this new vessel.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works
A contract has been awarded to Damen Shipyards to build a replacement for the MV Captain Earl Winsor, calling for a 14 knot, 80-metre ice-class vessel having roll-on, roll-off capability and a capacity to carry 200 passengers and 60 vehicles. Delivery of this new ferry is scheduled for September 2015.
Fifteen proposals were received in response to government's request for proposals for the construction of new ferry vessels. Following an extensive evaluation process, Damen Shipyards ranked highest among all bidders and was selected to build a quality vessel that will be delivered on time and on budget.
“Damen Shipyards is proud to have been selected to partner with the
Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to build the new 80-metre ferry for
Fogo Island and Change Islands.”
- Jan W. van Hogerwou, Manager North America, Damen Shipyards
The Provincial Government remains committed to providing transportation infrastructure that meets the economic and social needs of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
“This is a great day for residents of Fogo Island and Change Islands.
Government is making a significant investment which further demonstrates our
commitment to the region. I look forward to celebrating the arrival of the
new custom-built vessel for the Fogo Island, Change Islands run.”
- The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources and MHA for
the Isles of Notre Dame
The Provincial Government will begin negotiations immediately with Damen Shipyards for a second 80-metre ferry vessel to service Bell Island. Announcement of the contract cost and delivery date for this new ferry will be made in the coming weeks. The Provincial Government will invest a further $10 million to upgrade the wharf and related infrastructure at both the Bell Island and Portugal Cove terminals to accommodate the new vessel.
“This is a game-changer for the people of Bell Island. This super-ferry
will provide for added capacity on the busiest ferry service in the
province.”
- David Brazil, MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island
