Minister Celebrates Volunteer Contributions at 28th Annual Tenant Conference

More than 100 tenants, representing 34 Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) volunteer tenant associations, attended the 28th Annual Tenant Conference in Gander over the weekend (September 13-14). This year's conference theme was Because You Matter, and tenants were joined by the Honourable Paul Davis, Minister Responsible for NLHC, who addressed the conference Friday evening.

“Our volunteer community organizations have become motivating forces for change within our neighbourhoods,” said Minister Davis. “Their work, support and guidance have revitalized communities and helped many face challenging times. The conference continues to provide an excellent opportunity for tenants and NLHC to gather and discuss mutual goals and exchange ideas.”

Tenant associations include people of all ages who come together to organize community events and support causes in their neighbourhoods and communities. Minister Davis presented certificates of appreciation to the following tenant associations and community centres observing anniversaries.

• Neighbourhood Enhancement Association, representing the Cashin-Froude Avenue neighbourhood, St. John’s, celebrated its 20th anniversary;
• Wishingwell/Algerine Tenant Association, St. John’s; Pearlgate Tenant Association, Mount Pearl; and Hilltop Tenant Association, Corner Brook, each celebrated their 15th anniversary.
• E & H Tenant Association, Grand Falls-Windsor, celebrated its 10th anniversary; and,
• Buckmaster’s Circle Community Centre, St. John’s, was presented with a plaque to mark its 20th anniversary of providing programs and services to tenants.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide. A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and creating healthier communities.
