Two recent tenders with a combined value of $3.1 million will see
significant transportation upgrades taking place in the eastern region of
the province, as the Department of Transportation and Works continues to
deliver on a long list of priority projects for this year.
“This $3.1 million investment is part of our overall spending of $180
million this year to improve road, highway and bridge infrastructure
throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Paul Davis,
Minister of Transportation and Works. “Each project we undertake provides
long-term benefits for residents and short-term economic benefits for local
companies and local communities.”
The first tender calls for the replacement of Traverse Brook Bridge on Route
320. Johnson’s Construction Ltd. will construct a two-lane, 36-metre
concrete girder bridge for a total contract value of $2,781,249. Work is
expected to start immediately.
The second tender was awarded to Farrell’s Excavating Ltd. to cold plane and
repave sections of the TCH between Route 230, Bonavista Peninsula Highway
and Terra Nova National Park east boundary. The total contract value is
$343,068 and asphalt is expected to be installed during the third or fourth
week of September.
“I am pleased to see these major investments taking place to provide new
bridge construction and new asphalt in our region,” said Sandy Collins, MHA
for Terra Nova. “These improvements to our transportation system enhance
overall safety for all motorists travelling our roads.”
Through Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future, Provincial Government
spending will exceed $866 million on infrastructure projects and will
generate 5,330 person years of employment. Investments are being made in all
regions of Newfoundland and Labrador in key areas such as roads, bridges,
marine services, health, education, municipal works, buildings and
aquaculture.
