Public Advisory: Repairs Underway After Major Rain Storm on Burin Peninsula

The Department of Transportation and Works has had crews on site since midnight last evening, to assess damage and barricade roads that washed out as a major rain storm passed through the Burin Peninsula. Water levels have receded and repair work is already underway.

Road washouts occurred on Route 220 between Lawn and St. Lawrence; off Route 220 in Lords Cove; Route 220-10 Marine Drive in Marystown; Route 210-24 in Spanish Room; and on Route 220-16 in Lawn. Shoulder washouts occurred between St. Lawrence and Lords Cove; Spanish Room; Route 210 at Cow Head Lookout; and on Route 210 at Creston North Intersection and Red Harbour.

As of 2:30 p.m. today, all roads on the Burin Peninsula are open to traffic. Main roads have two-way traffic while secondary roads have one-lane of traffic in areas. Crews with the Department of Transportation and Works are assessing long-term repair needs and will continue to ensure the safety of the travelling public. Safety is the department’s top priority and motorists are urged to drive with caution and respect all signage and road working crews.

The rain storm also caused damage to municipal roads on the Burin Peninsula and municipalities are working on repairs. Residents should expect to receive information and updates from their respective municipalities.
