Public Advisory: Tender to be Called for Strait of Belle Isle Ferry Service

The Department of Transportation and Works is calling a tender for the provision of passenger and vehicle ferry service across the Strait of Belle Isle from St. Barbe to Blanc Sablon for a three-year term.

The contract will begin in April 2013 and continue until April 2016 as an interim measure while the Provincial Government secures purpose-built vessels for this service, and for coastal Labrador. A request for proposals will be issued to secure passenger, freight, and vehicle ferries for a 15-year term beginning in 2016.

Service across the Strait of Belle Isle is currently provided by Labrador Marine Inc. with the MV Apollo from St. Barbe to Blanc Sablon, and in winter months by CAI Nunatsiavut Marine Inc. with the MV Sir Robert Bond from Corner Brook to Blanc Sablon.
