Archives Preserve and Share the Stories of Families and Communities
Archives Week 2013 Celebrates Sense of Community
Archives Week 2013 is taking place November 17-23 and will focus on celebrating Newfoundland and Labrador’s archives and museums and the sense of community they foster. The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, joined members of the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives (ANLA) today for a proclamation signing to recognize the week.
“Our history is full of stories about great achievements, overcoming
adversity and coming together as families and communities, and our archives
help to preserve these stories so they can be passed on to the next
generation. Archives play a significant role in the sharing of that history
with all residents and visitors, and I encourage everyone to discover what
is available to them when it comes to archival records and research.”
- The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation
On November 22, the Association will host a symposium at The Rooms and bring together archivists and archives users, including writers, historians, genealogists and artists. The event will explore the variety of materials that are available in the many archives, libraries and other research facilities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. “Archives Week provides the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador
Archives with the opportunity to highlight the important task of preserving
and making available the documentary heritage of our province. A sense of
community is fostered when our shared history is available for enquiry,
interpretation and when our stories can be told for generations to come.
ANLA is grateful to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for
financial support provided through the Cultural Economic Development
Program.”
- Jenny Seeman, President of ANLA
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
