Community Recreation Programming Supported Through Provincial Government Funding

More than $532,000 has been allocated to support local recreation programming through the Provincial Government’s 2013 Community Recreation Development Grants Program. The application-based program is designed to help offset the cost of general recreation, sport and active-living programs in communities with less than 6,000 people.

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, along with the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education and MHA for Burin-Placentia West, and the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and MHA for Grand Bank, were in Little Bay this morning to announce that more than 150 small communities throughout the province will benefit from the program.

“Our support for local recreation and sport committees is also an investment in the residents of these towns and communities, and is in keeping with our goal of increasing participation in physical activity,” said Minister French. “Our government is delighted to provide more than $532,000 to help these organizations raise awareness and promote recreational activities in their local areas.”

Minister French also took the opportunity to announce the Little Bay Playground Committee has received a grant of $15,000 through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program to purchase new equipment for the Little Bay Multi-purpose Park.

“Our government continues to recognize the importance of recreation in the lives of our residents and the many benefits that are realized by these towns and communities when we support such endeavours,” said Minister Jackman. “I am delighted with the funding that has been announced here today, as this will certainly serve the area well in terms of our sport and recreation goals.”

A complete list of organizations receiving funding under the Community Recreation Development Grants Program can be found in the backgrounder below.

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $7.7 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the provincial sport and recreation strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
