Residents of Lamaline Welcome New Playground and Recreational Area

The residents of the Town of Lamaline welcomed the addition of a new playground, multi-purpose court, walking trail and green at St. Joseph’s Academy this past weekend, as the town officially opened its new park. The school’s Waves of Change Committee, in partnership with the volunteer organization Let Them Be Kids, received a $15,000 grant from the Provincial Government’s Community Capital Grants Program to assist with the development of the new recreational area.

“The new recreational area in Lamaline provides residents of the town, as well as those in surrounding communities, a wonderful green space to enjoy various recreational and outdoor activities,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Our government is pleased to provide $15,000 to support such a worthy project, one that will provide opportunities for increased participation in physical activity by all.”

The Waves of Change Committee of Lamaline is among the many community-based organizations, municipalities, schools and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest capital grant program investments.

“I am delighted with our government’s continued commitment to enhancing recreational facilities on the Burin Peninsula,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and MHA for Grand Bank. “It was a pleasure to attend the build day and opening on Sunday for the Waves of Change Park and witness the excitement from the children and people of the region.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $7.7 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the provincial sport and recreation strategy, approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
