Newfoundland and Labrador’s Story Told Through Archives

In an effort to ensure the ongoing protection, preservation and sharing of the province’s archives, funding of $50,000 has been provided to the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives (ANLA) under the heritage sector organization component of the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP). This funding is part of a $107,500 investment by the Provincial Government for community heritage organizations such as museums, archives and historical societies.

“It is important that we continue to support organizations such as the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives and the great work they do in preserving the heritage resources of our province, and I am pleased to provide them with a $50,000 grant,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Our government recognizes the value of protecting and promoting our culture and heritage, and our commitment is evident in the investments we have made over the past number of years."

CEDP projects are selected based on the strength of the business plans, vision and potential for development within the sector. The purpose of the program is to increase the sustainability of heritage groups by encouraging economic growth, enhancing the preservation and quality of heritage resources, encouraging professional research and interpretation, as well as focusing on promotion of best practices in the sector.

"Thanks to CEDP, we are able to provide training and advisory services to community archives across the province,” said Jenny Seeman, President of the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives. “The program has been instrumental in supporting these institutions as they care for the documentary heritage of this province and make it accessible to the wider world. Past support from the Provincial Government has also enabled the association to build a new database of archival records throughout the province. This exciting new tool will enable heritage institutions to share their collections with the public and will encourage use of best practices in description of records.”

A complete list of organizations receiving funding under the heritage sector organization component of the Cultural Development Economic Program can be found in the backgrounder below.

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides more than $11 million to support heritage preservation. Since the launch of Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture in 2006, the Provincial Government has invested $87 million through the plan to promote culture and heritage in the province.
