Minister Congratulates Recipients of
2013 Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program

Nineteen of the province’s top female and male athletes have received scholarships from Sport Newfoundland and Labrador (SportNL) to help offset the costs of training and competition. The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today congratulated the recipients for their dedication and hard work.

“With continued increases to the costs associated with training and competition, these scholarships will certainly be helpful to those receiving them,” said Minister French. “As a government, we are pleased to continue our support to Sport Newfoundland and Labrador and the work it does with the over 40 provincial sport organizations promoting the importance of sport and physical activity for all, in particular our children and youth, throughout the province. I commend all the scholarship recipients for their dedication and determination. Congratulations.”

A list of the scholarship recipients can be found in the backgrounder below.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to congratulate all the scholarship recipients and recognize their outstanding athletic and academic accomplishments,” said Rod Nicholl, President of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. “It takes special dedication to excel at such a high level in sport in addition to academics and we are extremely pleased to be able to recognize these scholarship recipients.”

The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program provides financial support to qualifying amateur athletes, coaches and officials enrolled in a post-secondary institution. The scholarships are valued at $500 each. In addition, Sport NL awards the Frank T. Butler Memorial Scholarship valued at $1,000. Frank Butler was vital to the development of athletics at Memorial University, and played an integral part in developing interuniversity sport experience across Canada.

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $7.7 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the provincial sport and recreation strategy, approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
