Provincial Government Supports Development of National Recreation Agenda
The need for a National Recreation Agenda was identified during the National
Recreation Summit held in Alberta in 2011 and the Government of Newfoundland
and Labrador is fully supportive.
“The Provincial Government has provided $13,000 to Recreation Newfoundland
and Labrador to support the development of a National Recreation Agenda,”
said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation. “This agenda will support the goals of increasing physical
activity; especially among children and youth, improve physical literary,
boost mass participation in sport and more. We are very pleased to see how
this will further enhance the goals and objectives of our provincial
recreation and sport strategy,
Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador. As
a government, we are proud to support Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador
as it leads the province’s participation in this important endeavor.”
During the June 2012 ministers conference, Ministers Responsible for Sport,
Physical Activity, and Recreation approved the development of a National
Recreation Agenda as part of promoting healthy, active communities and
quality of life.
The funding will support a small delegation from this province to
participate in a National Recreation roundtable being held May 29-30 in
Fredericton. The funding also supported participation in a National
Recreation Agenda consultation held by Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador
in St. John’s last month.
“I'm delighted that we are able to partner with the Department of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation in advancing the development of the National
Recreation Agenda,” said Tina Auchinleck-Ryan, President of Recreation
Newfoundland and Labrador. “Through this partnership we are able to ensure
that the recreational needs of our province are discussed and presented as
part of the National Recreation Agenda process.”
Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $7.7 million to support
recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the provincial
sport and recreation strategy, approximately $172 million has been committed
to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete
development throughout the province.
