Mining Week Kicks off in Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are encouraged to find out more about the mining industry through a variety of events happening from October 30 to November 2 as part of Mining Week, including the Women in Mining Forum, Geological Survey Lecture, and Mineral Resources Review Day.

“The mining industry makes a significant contribution to the growth of our economy, and creates jobs for many residents in rural communities throughout our province where mining operations are centred,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources. “Mining Week is an opportunity to work together with our partners to raise awareness and understanding of the industry, and to highlight the employment and business opportunities available for many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”

Mining Week will conclude with the annual Mineral Resources Review conference and trade show, a joint venture between the Department of Natural Resources and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum’s Newfoundland Branch. Approximately 800 delegates from the mining industry in the province and from across Canada are expected to attend.

“Given the significant role of mining in the history and future of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Mineral Resources Review is a prime opportunity to showcase the valuable contribution this sector is making to the province’s economy,” said Heather Bruce-Veitch, Honorary Chair of Provincial Mining Week. “With sustainable growth and continued expansion happening throughout the mining operations in the province, this multi-billion dollar industry will continue to provide great opportunities for future generations.”

Further information on Mining Week’s events is provided in the backgrounder below.

Newfoundland and Labrador is home to 11 active mines producing iron ore, nickel, copper, zinc, cobalt, and gold. The mining industry is a major contributor to the provincial economy with forecasted mineral shipments in 2013 of approximately $4.3 billion.
