Water and Sewer Services to be Enhanced in Trinity - Bay de Verde

The Provincial Government is investing $881,000 in funding for water and sewer projects, cost-shared with the towns of Bay de Verde, Hants Harbour and New Perlican. The announcements were made today by the Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development and MHA for Trinity - Bay de Verde.

“The provision of water and wastewater services is critical to the growth and development of strong and viable communities,” said Minister Kent. “Through our portion of this $881,000 investment, the Provincial Government is demonstrating a strong commitment to the people of this region, and the ongoing development of improved services for rural Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Funding for these projects is cost-shared, with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of the funding and the towns of Bay de Verde, Hants Harbour and New Perlican covering the remaining 10 per cent of their respective projects.

“This is a great day for the people of the area, and demonstrates the commitment of the Provincial Government to supporting development in all regions,” said Minister Johnson. “The funding being provided for these initiatives will deliver better services to residents and families in these communities for years to come.”

In Bay de Verde, $75,000 is being committed to conduct a study into the viability of a community septic system. In Hants Harbour, $687,000 will fund work to improve the Custard Head sewer and treatment system. In New Perlican, $119,000 is being committed to upgrade the water storage tanks in the community.

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes funding for the second year of a $130 million municipal capital works program. This investment is funding important infrastructure projects for towns and cities, and is delivering better services for families in areas such as water and waste water, recreation, road repair, and fire services, across the province.
