Fire Services Enhanced Through New Fire Truck for Lethbridge

The Honourable Kevin O'Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined by local residents and volunteer firefighters at the community centre in Lethbridge recently to announce $230,000 in funding for the purchase of a new pumper tanker firefighting vehicle for that region.

“Communities in rural Newfoundland and Labrador need reliable and dependable firefighting vehicles and equipment to function properly,” said Minister O'Brien. “I was very pleased to announce an investment of $230,000 in the community of Lethbridge for the purchase of a new pumper tanker to serve the region. The vehicle is important for the Local Service District, which includes the communities of Lethbridge, Brooklyn, Morley’s Siding, Jamestown, Winterbrook, Portland, Sweet Bay and Charlestown, and it will go a long way in ensuring fires and emergency situations are addressed quickly and efficiently in the future.”

The new fire truck will be delivered in the fall of 2014 and will cost approximately $230,000. It will be cost-shared between the Provincial Government and the Local Service District through a 90/10 cost-share ratio.

"This region is truly a gem of rural Newfoundland and Labrador and was in need of a new firefighting vehicle," said Glen Little, MHA for Bonavista South. "This announcement is very positive news and I look forward to the day when the truck is delivered and the people of the region can see it first-hand. This Provincial Government investment, like many others in this region, is a wise choice for a Local Service District that works very hard to ensure residents’ needs are addressed.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future contained $1.5 million for the purchase of new fire trucks and emergency response vehicles and $380,000 for new fire equipment throughout the province.
