Firefighter Training Roundtable Discussions Set to Begin

To ensure fire training provided by the Provincial Government is meeting the needs of municipalities and fire departments throughout the province, Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) has announced a series of roundtable discussions to be held over the next month.

“Our first series of roundtable discussions on training in 2007 resulted in the creation of the Fire and Emergency Services Training School, which provides two successful regional training opportunities annually for firefighters,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador. “Five years and 10 training schools later, the time has come to review the current training methods in consultation with our communities and fire departments. Fire protection is a municipal responsibility and FES-NL is committed to providing a modern, quality firefighter training program to help deliver a standardized level of safety and training for these important volunteers.”

Dates and locations for the roundtable sessions can be found in the backgrounder below.

“Engaging stakeholders is important when developing programs and services,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement. “Through this dialogue and discussion with firefighters, we will continue to ensure the capacity is there to support this essential service. I would also like to thank all the volunteer firefighters throughout Newfoundland and Labrador for their dedication and commitment to their communities.”

Participants attending the sessions will be required to identify themselves as a firefighter, training officer, fire chief or municipal official. Fire departments unable to be represented in-person are invited to join the discussions online via Webex on June 26. Access information for the Webex session is available by contacting FES-NL’s Fire Protection Services Division at 709-729-1608.
