Inmates Apply Carpentry Skills in Effort
to Make Community Better for Families

Inmates and Staff Construct Receptacles for Social Housing Units

Inmates and staff at the Bishop’s Falls Correctional Centre are lending a helping hand to the Action Community in Exploits (A.C.E.) Neighbourhood Centre to enhance social housing units in Bishop’s Falls. A recent project at the correctional centre resulted in the construction of trash receptacles for a number of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s units in the town.

“With this project, inmates have the opportunity to not only learn new skills and develop confidence in their abilities through positive achievements, but also to give something back to the community. Their efforts are having a direct, positive impact on families in the Bishop’s Falls area. I am proud of the inmates’ hard work, and I also commend the staff of the Bishop’s Falls Correctional Centre for taking the initiative to implement this worthwhile project.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice

A grant provided by the Provincial Government allowed the A.C.E. Neighbourhood Centre to provide enough material for 25 receptacles. This is not the first project for inmates at the correctional centre. In the workshop located at the centre, they have also constructed picnic tables, trash receptacles and flower pots for local playgrounds and a skate park.

“The Bishop Falls Correctional Centre has always been a welcome addition to the town and region. It is encouraging to know that the inmates, with the support of the staff, are making a positive contribution to the community.”
- Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits

The A.C.E. Neighbourhood Centre provides educational, health and wellness, skill-based and social programs for residents of Bishop’s Falls and the surrounding area.

“The A.C.E. Neighbourhood Centre would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to both the staff and the inmates of the Bishop’s Falls Correctional Centre. We look forward to being able to join teams again and partner with future projects.”
- Vickie Chippett, Program Assistant with the A.C.E. Neighbourhood Centre

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
