Minister Congratulates Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Cadet Graduates
The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice, is congratulating the 18
Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) cadets who formally graduated on
Saturday (August 24) from Memorial University’s Diploma Program in Police
Studies. The cadets became official officers of the RNC during their
graduation and swearing-in ceremony which was held at The Field House at
Memorial.
“The 18 men and women who graduated this weekend will be great contributors
to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary,” said Minister King. “I commend them
for choosing such a worthy profession. Throughout their studies, these
recruit cadets displayed the care, diligence, and extensive effort that is
required of our province’s police officers as they work to maintain safe and
secure communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
The Diploma Program in Police Studies has been offered since 2004 by
Memorial University. It gives RNC cadets the opportunity to train in
Newfoundland and Labrador as they gain the information and experience that
are necessary to become a police officer. To date, 211 police officers have
graduated from the program and these graduates make up more than half of the
RNC’s current police force.
“I am very honored to welcome the new recruit constables to the Royal
Newfoundland Constabulary,” said Police Chief Robert P. Johnston. “They are
exceptional young women and men who have chosen policing as a career and we
look forward to helping them achieve their goals in the field of law
enforcement.”
The Provincial Government recognizes the need for an effective and
well-trained police force. Since 2004, over 140 police officers have been
added to the province’s police forces and annual policing budgets have
increased by over $50 million.
