Culinary Talents Promoted Throughout the Province with $25,000 Investment

The Restaurant Association of Newfoundland and Labrador’s From This Rock Culinary Tour was a huge success with the support of the Provincial Government’s investment of $25,000. The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, attended the final event of the 2013 tour Tuesday evening at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s.

“The From This Rock Culinary Tour does an excellent job promoting our province’s restaurants and chefs, and the restaurant association is working hard to grow culinary tourism and agri-tourism right across the province,” said Minister Johnson. “I am pleased that this $25,000 investment supported this year’s tour, and I am sure as time goes on, this event will support a broader pan-provincial product development legacy around culinary arts, as well as the importance of using local food products.”

The Restaurant Association of Newfoundland and Labrador has been representing the interests of the food service industry in Newfoundland and Labrador for close to 50 years. The From This Rock Culinary Tour is an innovative event intended to promote local food, farms and farmers, fishers and foragers along with the growing presence of these local resources in the province’s booming culinary scene.

“The funding provided by the Provincial Government has made the growth of the From This Rock event possible, and positioned our association to add one venue this year with an eye to adding at least two, and possibly three more, next year,” said Nancy Brace, Executive Director of the Restaurant Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. “This is a massive undertaking, one that we see growing larger and encompassing tourism packages that allow the consumer to buy various experiences built around the culinary tour, therefore building up culinary tourism across the province. Provincial funding helps us build and strengthen this project so it becomes viable and sustainable.”
