Blow Me Down Makeover Happening in Time for National Championships

The Blow Me Down Cross Country Ski Club is making some much needed improvements to their lodge thanks to an investment of $88,000 from the Provincial Government. The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, made the announcement today at the Blow Me Down Cross Country Ski Club Lodge in Corner Brook, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development.

“Cross country skiing and biathlons have been contributing to the economic and business growth of this region for many years and it is critical for this to continue,” said Minister Hutchings. “Tourism is a priority sector for the Corner Brook region and cross-country skiing has been a growing sport both provincially and nationally. A larger, more effective facility will allow the club to host more national events and continue to grow and enhance winter tourism in the province.”

The renovations will allow the club to house all necessary amenities in one building for a more cost effective and efficient operation. Renovations will include siding, windows, roof, insulation, a new furnace and new washroom facilities. It will also include new furniture and commercial kitchen equipment. As a result of the upgrades, the lodge will be able to accommodate its 700-plus members and seat 150 people for major events. This will allow the club to support their growing membership base and host various events such as the 2014 Cross Country Canada National Junior and Senior Championships.

“Our club has a long history in Corner Brook and area with beginnings about 50 years ago,” said Bill Barry, Development Coordinator of Blow Me Down Cross Country Ski Club. “We have 40 kilometres of quality groomed trails, 6.5 kilometres of lighted trail system, and various ski programs for both members and non-members. We aim to provide a unique experience in the winter tourism sector and enrich the availability of winter activity options in the Humber Valley as a destination in Western Newfoundland. This funding will certainly help us in achieving that goal.”

Vaughn Granter is MHA for Humber West and understands the benefits to the region.

“Blow Me Down Cross Country Ski Club is a major winter icon in the region and in the province,” said MHA Granter. “The skiing, snowshoeing, and biathlon opportunities offered by the club are of immense benefit to the community and the economic life of region. We are very happy that Blow Me Down Cross Country Ski Club will be able to continue their long, successful track record of hosting provincial, national and international cross country skiing and biathlon events as well as provide recreational activities to residents.”

This initiative was funded through the Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund as part of Budget 2012. The program provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
