Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Proclaimed in Newfoundland and Labrador

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Newfoundland and Labrador, and a time to highlight the importance of prevention and early detection of prostate cancer.

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services, was joined by local prostate cancer survivors to sign a proclamation declaring September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

“Prostate cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in Newfoundland and Labrador, and we know that awareness is the greatest tool for the early detection and prevention of this type of cancer,” said Minister Sullivan. “With approximately 500 men expected to be diagnosed this year in the province, our government strongly encourages the practice of healthy living and active discussion of concerns with health care professionals. Early detection can help save lives.”

The Provincial Government has invested $195,000 to support prostate cancer awareness initiatives throughout the province in the last number of years, including the annual Walk a Mile in His Shoes and Motorcycle Ride for Dad events, as well as annualized funding for provincial prostate cancer support groups.

“Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to affect Canadian men, with one in seven expected to be diagnosed with this disease in their lifetime,” said Peter Mallette, Executive Director, Prostate Cancer Canada Atlantic. “The good news is that most cases of prostate cancer are curable if detected early, which is why raising awareness is so important. One of the initiatives taking place to help create awareness during Prostate Cancer Month is the first annual St. John’s Wakeup Call Breakfast on September 26.”
