Minister Announces Health Care Investment of Over $790,000 in Burin
Significant upgrades to the pharmacy and the addition of new equipment that
supports chemotherapy services at the Burin Peninsula Health Centre in Burin
were some of the highlights of a $793,000 investment announced today by the
Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services.
“Throughout Newfoundland and Labrador residents can avail of quality health
care treatment from highly-qualified health care professionals,” said
Minister Sullivan. “Investments such as the $793,000 announced here
today in Burin ensure that this high level of patient care is sustained over
the long term. These are positive investments that will have a direct impact
on the community and the wider region.”
Other initiatives made possible by today’s investment include the addition
of new eye exam equipment and heart monitoring technology.
“On this the 25th anniversary year of the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre
it is exciting and rewarding to see new technologies and services being
provided to the residents of the Burin Peninsula,” said the Honourable Clyde
Jackman, Minister of Education and MHA for Burin - Placentia West.
Minister Sullivan also took the opportunity to highlight the continued
progress of the new health facility in Marystown North with Chard’s
Construction having recently been awarded a contract for $1.3 million to
construct the building. Upon its completion in 2014 the new health
facility will include such services as blood collection, community and
public health, as well as patient examination rooms.
“These improvements to our health care system benefit everyone in the area,”
said Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue. “They improve quality of life and
provide important access to the excellent health care that our province
continues to provide.”
The Provincial Government has invested over $1.2 billion in health care
capital equipment, new infrastructure, repairs and renovations including
almost $10 million in Burin, since 2004.
“Eastern Health thanks the Provincial Government for this substantial
investment that will greatly enhance the equipment and infrastructure at the
Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre,” said Dr. Oscar Howell, Vice President
of Medical Services and Diagnostics at Eastern Health. “We also commend the
Provincial Government on the progress that is being made towards building a
new health care facility in Marystown North, which will allow the people in
that area to receive the care they need closer to home.”
Budget 2013 allocates approximately $3 billion for the provision of health
care in Newfoundland and Labrador.
