Michael Kennedy Receives Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship

The sixth annual Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship was presented recently by the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, to Michael Kennedy of Spaniard’s Bay.

The $1,000 scholarship was created to promote awareness and appreciation of the province’s fishing and aquaculture industry, and the exciting careers that can be had within this industry.

Michael Kennedy’s essay focused on the various aquatic invasive species and the harm they can cause to the environment, and industry.

• Michael Kennedy has been awarded the sixth annual Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship valued at $1,000.
  
• Scholarship applications require strong academic standing and participation in extracurricular activities, as well as an essay of 2,500 words or less that discusses issues facing the fishing or aquaculture industries and offers possible solutions.
  
• In addition to the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship, the Provincial Government supports student engagement in marine issues by providing funding for the Ocean Education Initiative, Students on Ice scholarships, funding provided for student placements at the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research, and the Dr. Wilfred Templeman Memorial Scholarship for graduate students.
