Students on Ice Scholarship Continues to Make Learning Adventures Possible

Silas Jones, a 17-year-old Grade 12 student from Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John’s, was recently awarded a $12,000 Students on Ice scholarship through the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. The scholarship will enable Mr. Jones to join an arctic expedition that helps students develop a better understanding of environmental issues, and a greater respect for the planet.

“The Provincial Government continues to engage youth in marine studies by funding multiple Students on Ice Scholarships each year,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. “I congratulate Silas for earning the $12,000 scholarship offered by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, and I wish him all the best as he embarks on an unforgettable learning experience.”

From July 14 to 28, 70 international students will engage in an expedition led by a team of 35 world-class scientists, historians, artists, explorers, and educators. Expedition activities include wildlife encounters, visits to Arctic communities and archeological sites, and opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge and insight into the dynamics of climate change.

“This scholarship shows this government’s commitment to youth engagement, and to developing the talents of our next generation,” said MHA David Brazil. “I have learned that Silas is an extraordinary student who already enjoys marine exploration, and so I am sure he will be a fine ambassador for our province on this expedition.”

Mr. Jones was chosen by Students on Ice to receive the scholarship for several reasons, including academic achievement, volunteerism, and his previous experience with marine environments as an open-water SCUBA diver.

"I am very grateful for the scholarship and the opportunity it has given me,” said Mr. Jones. “The Students on Ice expedition is my chance to explore and learn from the Arctic with students and experts who share my interest in science and nature."

In addition to providing scholarships, the Provincial Government engages youth in marine studies by funding the Dr. Wilfred Templeman Memorial Scholarship for graduate students; the Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship; and student placements at the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research at the Marine Institute.
