Youth Go Green in Newfoundland and Labrador

As part of the Turn Back the Tide campaign, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is partnering with the Community Youth Network this month to launch an initiative, raise awareness and take action on climate change by participating in go green activities.

“Our youth have a strong understanding of climate change and are eager to help secure this province’s sustainable future,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for the Office of Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Emissions Trading. “The support and action of young people is an important factor in responding to the challenges of tackling climate change.”

The activities begin today (Monday, August 12) and continue throughout the month.

“The Turn Back the Tide campaign is one of the key mechanisms that our province is using to engage youth in the important environmental issues facing our province,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement. “As the future decision-makers in our province, it is a priority of this government to ensure that youth are equipped with the best possible tools to take action on climate change.”

As part of the initiative, Community Youth Network sites will help tackle climate change by participating in activities that will focus on three key themes; greener transportation, waste reduction, and lowering our carbon footprints. Events will include a trivia contest on the Turn Back the Tide Facebook page , a cell phone recycling challenge, and a competition to reduce their carbon footprints.

Turn Back the Tide is the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s public awareness campaign on climate change and energy efficiency.
