Premier to Participate in Badger Monument Unveiling
The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will
participate in the unveiling of a new monument in Badger today (Wednesday,
July 31). The event will take place at the corner of Beothuck Street and
River Road beginning at 3:00 p.m.
The two plaques of the new Badger Monument will commemorate one of the most
significant and tragic events in Newfoundland and Labrador’s history. One
plaque pays tribute to Constable William Moss, of the Newfoundland
Constabulary, who was fatally injured on March 10, 1959, during a riot of
striking loggers.
“For all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, Badger will forever be recognized
as the place where, from one of life's greatest tragedies, we learned one of
life's greatest lessons. We must always find ways to work through
differences whenever they arise, because life is fragile and precious,” said
Premier Dunderdale. “Let this profound lesson be the enduring legacy of
Constable William Moss.”
The monument’s second plaque honours the dedication to improving labour
conditions and relationships.
“While the strike here in 1959 ultimately resulted in significant
improvements in the loggers’ working conditions, the death of Constable Moss
also had a much more profound effect on the people of the province,” said
Premier Dunderdale. “It came to signify the beginning of a new era – an era
where health and safety and fair benefits for all workers became a priority
for employees, employers, and administrators.”
