Community-Based Investments Support Health and Wellness
Over 100 community groups and not-for-profit organizations will
strengthen their ability to advance valuable programs and initiatives
through a total Provincial Government investment of $862,500. These grants
focus on a range of health initiatives, including age-friendly communities,
wellness and cancer prevention and awareness.
The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and
MHA for Virginia Waters, made the announcement today at MacMorran Community
Centre in St. John’s, where she was joined by the Honourable Susan Sullivan,
Minister of Health and Community Services.
“Community groups make important contributions to the people and regions
they serve,” said Premier Dunderdale. “My government has long recognized the
value of supporting community groups, as demonstrated by this year’s
financial contribution. These groups are delivering important programs and
services to children, families and seniors, and we see ourselves as a
partner in their success.”
The Provincial Government’s health and wellness grants provide financial
support to community-based organizations to engage in projects which
complement the priority areas of the Department of Health and Community
Services. A list of grant recipients can be viewed in the backgrounder
below.
“Our government is committed to ensuring community groups have the necessary
supports in place to carry out the invaluable work they do,” said Minister
Sullivan. “We will continue to offer various programs to support groups to
allow them to further their work at the community level.”
Since 2005, the Provincial Government has awarded almost $6 million in health and wellness grants to further activities that support the work being done through several provincial strategies, including the Provincial Wellness Plan, Healthy Aging Policy Framework, and the Cancer Control Policy Framework.
