Sporting Excellence Honoured at Premier’s Athletic Awards

The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today recognized athletic excellence in the province through the annual Premier’s Athletic Awards. A total of $91,000 was presented to 125 provincial athletes at the 2013 Premier’s Athletic Awards held today at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s.

“The level of athletic excellence that exists in Newfoundland and Labrador is renowned nationally and internationally, and the annual Premier’s Athletic Awards Program recognizes the achievements of our top young athletes,” said Premier Dunderdale. “Their accomplishments are not only a testament to their athletic ability, but also to the commitment and hard work that has culminated in the awards they have earned today. I commend their efforts and wish them well in their future endeavours.”

The Premier’s Athletic Awards Program provides grants in the amounts of $500, $1,000, and $1,500 to assist young athletes with the costs of training and competition at the elite level. The amount each recipient receives is dependent on the level of competition in which they are engaged, as well as the training requirements.

“Support for our provincial athletes remains a priority for our government, and programs such as the Premier’s Athletic Awards help our athletes attain their goals,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “We are delighted to celebrate their excellence and dedication through these prestigious awards.”

A complete list of recipients can be found in the backgrounder below.

The awards ceremony also included the presentation of the Team Gushue Scholarship Awards to softball player Shane Boland of Kilbride and swimmer Katarina Roxon of Stephenville. These awards, valued at $5,000 each, are made available through application to the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program.

The Premier’s Athletic Awards Program was established in 2005 and has provided approximately $700,000 to support athletic excellence in Newfoundland and Labrador. For eligibility requirements and detailed information about the program, visit www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/sports/
