Media Advisory: Minister to Participate in 99th Anniversary of 1914 Sealing Disasters of the SS Southern Cross and SS Newfoundland

The Honourable Felix Collins, Minister for Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs, will participate in a ceremony commemorating the 99th anniversary of the SS Southern Cross and SS Newfoundland disaster which claimed the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians participating in the annual seal hunt.

The ceremony will take place on Monday, April 1, at 10:00 a.m., at the St. John’s Port Authority Building, 1 Water Street, St. John’s.

The ceremony is being organized as part of the Home from the Sea Campaign, which is working toward the construction of a Sealers Memorial in Elliston. The Provincial Government is a strong supporter of this campaign having provided $500,000 in financial support in recent years.
