Volunteers, the Heart of Our Communities

From serving on town councils to local fire departments, volunteers of all ages play an important role in the health and vibrancy of communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. That message was highlighted today by the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement.

“In communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, volunteers are playing a significant role in social and economic development,” said Minister Hutchings. “When individuals and the community at large unite for a common cause, they are a powerful force for change and improvement. This grass-roots approach to sustaining and developing healthy communities is indicative of every community throughout our province.”

To reinforce this message, Minister Hutchings acknowledged the contribution of volunteers to two towns in particular that are marking a significant milestone this year - the 50th anniversary of incorporation for the Towns of St. Shotts and Portugal Cove South.

“For 50 years, the citizens of the towns of St. Shotts and Portugal Cove South have volunteered their time for the betterment of their communities,” said Minister Hutchings. “As a government, we recognize their value and support their goals in achieving stronger and more viable communities and regions. I would like to congratulate and thank all those who give of themselves each day and encourage others, especially our youth, to get involved in their community.”

The Office of Public Engagement actively supports volunteers through initiatives such as the URock Volunteer Award and Volunteer Week. In keeping with this year’s Volunteer Week theme “Let’s Make Some Noise!”, Minister Hutchings invites all citizens to nominate an outstanding young volunteer or youth-based organization in their community for a URock Award and encourages everyone to participate in Volunteer Week 2013, taking place from April 21 to 27.
