Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following event relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Gill Mine Re-activation
Proponent: Labrador Iron Mines Limited                                     (Reg. 1728)

Labrador Iron Mines is proposing to re-activate and mine an ore deposit on the Gill property, located in the western central part of the Labrador Trough Iron Range. Ore will excavated from an open pit and trucked approximately 500 metres to the existing Silver Yard beneficiation plant. Ore will be prepared for “direct shipping”, via crushing, washing, screening and gravity separation. Processed ore will be transported by rail to Sept Iles, Quebec, from where it will be shipped to market. Mining will progress from less than 3,000 tonnes per day and will peak at 7,000-10,000 tonnes per day. Construction and production are anticipated to commence in 2014.

The undertaking was registered on October 7, 2013; the deadline for public comments is November 20, 2013; and the minister’s decision is due November 28, 2013.
