Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following event relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Foxtrap On-site Centrifuge Process for Offshore Drilling Mud
Proponent: Newalta Corporation                      (Reg. 1706)

The proponent proposes to install one centrifuge and four 80 cubic metre handling tanks at its approved hazardous waste transfer facility located near Foxtrap, at 349 Incinerator Road off Route 61, approximately 20 kilometres from St. John’s. The addition of the proposed centrifuge provides an on-island solution to separate the non-hazardous drilling mud into its three recoverable components including hydrocarbons, water and solids. This process is expected to recover additional components for the beneficial re-use and recycling as well as reduce the amount of material transported out of province. Newalta will begin centrifuge operations upon receipt of approvals and permits, in Spring 2013.

The undertaking was registered on April 10, 2013; the deadline for public comments is May 15, 2013; and the minister’s decision is due by May 25, 2013.
