Outreach Program Highlights Wildlife in the Province

To coincide with National Wildlife Week being celebrated April 7-13, the Department of Environment and Conservation will host several events to highlight various wildlife species in the province. Through the wildlife division’s Outreach Program, a wide range of wildlife-based presentations are being offered to schools and general audiences.

“We have an abundance of wildlife in Newfoundland and Labrador, and part of our mandate is to help residents of all ages understand the role they play in our province,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. “Through our outreach program, our aim is to foster an understanding of the biology of our various species, behaviours, habitats and diversity, to name a few. It is also important that we understand the many nuances surrounding human-wildlife interactions.”

A presentation on coyotes in Newfoundland and Labrador will be given to residents of Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residence in St. John’s on April 10 at 2:00 p.m. Additionally, the general public is invited to the Downhome Expo at the Glacier Arena in Mount Pearl at 6:00 p.m. on April 12, where general safety practices when encountering the island’s predators will be presented in a 15-minute program.

Teachers and interested groups are invited to call 709-229-7888 to arrange for a presentation by wildlife staff. A list of the available programs can be found in the backgrounder below.
