Investing in the Future of Children and Families

New TV Ads Highlighted During Play and Learn Week

Play-based learning is being highlighted this week in primary schools across the province as teachers, students and parents participate in the second annual Play and Learn Week (November 4-8).

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, today joined families and staff at the Bishop Abraham Elementary family resource centre in St. John’s, operated by Daybreak Parent Child Centre, to launch this year’s event, and to showcase some new advertisements to be featured as part of the ongoing Power of Play campaign.

“Play-based learning is an essential part of a child’s early development. Having the opportunity to take part in playful learning experiences, beginning at birth and extending into the school years, also helps support and reinforce the primary curriculum. Ultimately, we want to give every child the best possible start in life, to allow them to be healthy, happy, engaged, well-adjusted children who are well-prepared for success in school, in their relationships, and in life.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education

Over $140,000 has been earmarked this year for books, CDs, multi-media resources, and promotional activities related to implementation of Play and Learn Week and the Power of Play initiative. “Our government recognizes the importance of supporting the healthy growth and development of children and their families. Therefore, it is essential that families with young children are able to avail of quality early learning opportunities provided through child care centres, family child care homes, and family resource centres.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
