Minister Joins NLTA in Celebrating Education Week

This is Education Week in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, is once again joining the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA) in recognizing all those who devote their time and energies into the education, development and growth of young students in this province.

“As a former teacher, principal, school district program specialist, and now as Minister of Education, I have had the distinct privilege of working with educators and service providers who have a passion for helping young people succeed,” said Minister Jackman. “There are many extraordinary, innovative things happening in our classrooms each and every day, and I take this opportunity to thank our teachers, administrators, and all those who deliver top quality educational services to our children.”

The theme for Education Week is, Rooted in Education, Growing the Future – Enraciné dans L’éducation, Se développer pour l'avenir. Minister Jackman said the theme is very appropriate, given the link between an educated population and the continued growth and prosperity of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“The purpose of Education Week is to celebrate education and to encourage parents, community members and other educational stakeholders to become more involved with education, along with students and teachers,” said Jim Dinn, President of the NLTA.

Meanwhile, Minister Jackman noted that this year, Thursday, October 10, is being recognized as School Councils Day, and parents and other community partners are encouraged to learn more about their school council activities.

“School councils are responsible for approving the school development plan and supporting the school administration in its efforts to improve student achievement,” said Minister Jackman. “I encourage all school communities to recognize the volunteers who serve in this important capacity.”
