Wabush Child Care Centre Receives Funding Support

To further support the development of regulated child care services throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Government is making an additional investment of $107,000 to the Building Blocks Child Care Centre in Wabush. Children, families and staff of Building Blocks, as well as representatives of Labrador West Child Care Incorporated, joined the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services, at the child care centre today for this funding announcement.

“I am delighted to announce an additional investment of $107,000 in operational funding for the Building Blocks Child Care Centre in Wabush,” said Minister Johnson. “This brings our government’s total investment in the centre to over $699,100 in developmental and operational funding since 2011. This funding provides the necessary support that allows Building Blocks to continue offering quality and affordable child care to families with young children enrolled in the centre’s child care program.”

The Building Blocks Child Care Centre, which is licensed for 60 regulated child care spaces, has a current enrollment of 40 children in three homerooms. As a result of recently hiring additional staff, the centre will be opening a fourth homeroom in September creating 15 more spaces.

“This investment will help meet a real need by providing safe and reliable child care for Labradorian families,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. “Initiatives such as this help to enrich our communities, and I am pleased to support the additional child care resources for the Labrador West region.”

The Child Care Capacity Initiative which is a key component of the 10-Year Child Care Strategy, Caring For Our Future, provides start-up and operational funding to non-profit organizations for the development of regulated child care spaces in communities throughout the province. Since it was first launched in 2006, this initiative has created over 420 additional spaces as a result of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s support of capacity building projects, such as the Building Blocks Child Care Centre.

“Without the help from our staff, volunteers, community partners, and the Provincial Government, we would not have two very successful centres in Labrador West today,” said Tanya Hatch, Board Chairperson of Labrador West Child Care Inc. “We are pleased to provide affordable and quality child care services to families through our centres, Building Blocks and the After School Zone. Child care services in Labrador West have been in great demand for some time now and we are very pleased with all the support that has been given to make child care services a reality.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future allocates an investment of $31.1 million for child care in Newfoundland and Labrador with a focus on continuing the implementation of Caring For Our Future.
