New Child Care Centre in Flower’s Cove Receives Funding

The Little Folks Child Care Centre in Flower’s Cove will receive an additional investment of up to $82,000 from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to assist with ongoing operations. This funding assists with the development of regulated child care spaces throughout the province, which is a key component of the 10-Year Child Care Strategy, Caring For Our Future.

“A need for regulated child care was identified in this community and the Provincial Government responded by providing over $121,000 in developmental funding earlier this year and approximately $82,000 in operational funding today,” said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services. “This investment for the Little Folks Child Care Centre in Flower’s Cove is an example of how our government remains focused on providing quality, sufficient and affordable child care to families with young children.”

The Little Folks Child Care Centre, which opened on June 10, is licensed for 19 regulated child care spaces and provides children with the opportunity to learn through play. The centre has also received support from community partners including the Town of Flowers Cove, Nordic Economic Development Corporation, Community Education Network and Associates, Community Business Development Corporations, and the Northern Peninsula Family Resource Centre.

“The board is so pleased with all the support that this initiative has received for the past two and a half years,” said Natasha Way, Board Chairperson of the Straits Daycare Corporation. “Without our committed volunteers, our community partners and the Provincial Government we would not be here today. Little Folks Child Care Centre is something that has been needed in our region for quite some time and we are extremely pleased to be able to offer this service to our families and hopefully to attract new families to our area.”

The Provincial Government has supported capacity building projects, such as the Little Folks Child Care Centre, since 2006 when the Child Care Capacity Initiative was first launched. This initiative, which remains a key component of Caring For Our Future, provides start-up and operational funding to not-for-profit organizations for the development of regulated child care spaces in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. To date, the Child Care Capacity Initiative has created over 420 additional regulated child care spaces.

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future allocates an investment of $31.1 million for child care in Newfoundland and Labrador with a focus on continuing the implementation of Caring For Our Future.
